Graphics card:
Your board is equipped with a PCI-E socket allowing for any modern graphics card to be installed. your only limitation is the power supply in the unit which sadly is only 300 watts.
Although that should be more than enough to run a mid range card such as ATI 4670 /57XX. Personally I recommend ATi as at present the 4XXX range can be found for peanuts and are incredibly powerful cards for the price. The 5XXX range of ATi cards are expensive and do not offer a huge performance boost over previous generation 4X but they do come with DX11 support as opposed to DX10.1, Although this is neither hear nor there given a large portion of new releases are still using DX9 and DX10.0 graphical architectures.
If you do want to go high end with a 4870 (a fantastic card) or have money to burn on a 5870, you will require a newer power supply unit. 500 Watts will be sufficient, but be warned, with power supply’s, you get what you pay for, I recommend brands such as Antec, Akasa, OCZ, Enermax.
Other upgrades:
Your board is an AM2+ board and thus should be compatible with the majority of new AM3 processors, although you may need to update your bios to achieve full compatibility with the AM3 range. This can be done from dells driver support section. However according to dell your system is already fitted with a quad core AMD which is more than enough for the most demanding tasks.
Memory:
According to dell your system comes with 8gig of DDR 2. in this day and age, 2gig is fine, 4 is ample, 8 is more than enough!!
Rule:
After 16 years of building, fixing, repairing, and selling systems and networks, the golden rule of a performance PC is this…
“Your PC is only as fast as its slowest component”
Which in your case is the graphics card.
Good luck and happy gaming.
p.s. don’t forget to turn up your graphics settings and resolutions on your games when you get a new card, you would be amazed at the amount of people who buy power gaming systems and play games on default settings!! A complete waste of power and money.
