While hooked to your standard monitor, go in to display properties and change the screen refresh rate down to 60 Hertz. It worked for me.

I would get an HP just because if something eventually does go wrong you can replace the part(s) with very little experience and for a low amount of money. Wish I could say the same for Apple products. When it comes down to hardware failures, it would cost you the amount that you paid for the computer initially to replace a piece for a Apple. I honestly suggest that you go with an HP, not only because the parts are easy to come by, but also because they have a pretty good track record as well as some very good deals.

As far as good computers and prices go... I would check out bestbuy.com and search for the model: p6674y It has quite a lot of good features as well as being affordable... especially if you only need the tower.

nothing against apple
but parts are parts . you are buying service ( a +) and the operating system
anything you need you have to get from apple ( very big down side ) need more ram -ha not cheap ( apple )
so the best thing to do is look at a computer the has a good track record in that range
here is what has never let me down
dell , gateway, asus , acre ( yes ) , and alienware
they range in age from 5 years to present
and as of yeaterday i do have to replace a dvdrw drive in my dell laptop ---42 bucks and 10 minutes of my time ( not bad for heavy use in 4 years )

Your HP has no PCI slots. It's PCI Express x1 only, so make sure you get the right type of card.

These options from Newegg will work: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=Property&N=40000073&IsNodeId=1&Description=firewire%20card&PropertyCodeValue=1871%3A17619%2C1871%3A18979&bop=And&Order=RATING&PageSize=20
Check the external connectors. 9-pin are required for Firewire 800, but can be used for slower firewire speeds with a simple cable. 6-pin supports Firewire 400 and below.

Nice catch Ryled. I don't know why HP would cut PCI on a computer several years ago, but that's the case.

Get a Firewire PCIe card. HOWEVER, be sure you get one that's native PCIe, because a lot of cheaper ones will use a PCI to PCIe bridge chip and performance (especially in sensitive apps like audio) will suffer as a result.
